What is SEIU-UHW Member Driven?

​

As members of the largest healthcare union in California, approximately 100,000 strong, Member Driven is a community of like-minded SEIU-UHW members dedicated to fighting for the protections of healthcare workers through

contract enforcement and local representation. As a union, our collective strength comes from standing

together, forming successful partnerships, and negotiating better working conditions. 

Unfortunately, our current union leaders have disregarded us at the local level to pursue personal agendas.

The SEIU-UHW Member Driven team is committed to pursuing the interests of our union members. We bridge the gap between members' rights and local issues, while also empowering our sisters and brothers across the state through education, empowerment, and encouraging them to become active members of their union. ​

Each voice matters and we prioritize building up leaders.

About Member Driven

 

In 2019, many of us realized reluctantly that our union's highest leaders were actively working against member interest's and instead pushing for their own personal agendas.  A Facebook group was created as a safe space for union members to come together to ask questions, share information, and grow a group of member leaders who were ready to step up and demand that our union get back to the basics of member representation, education, support, and ethics.

 

We fought hard and ran against current leadership in the 2023 Executive Board election. Although this is supposed to be a fair and democratic process, we were up against lying, cheating, and stealing at all levels. We have involved SEIU International and the Department of Labor to bring forward election malfeasance. We push forward, demanding accountability, transparency, education and support for our members, and above all- local representation and contract enforcement. We ask that all members get involved and become a part of the union

they pay into and are member owners of.

 

The next Executive Board election will be in Spring of 2026 and we once again plan to run against our current complacent and ineffectual leaders. Our Member Driven Leaders will step up to dedicate themselves to this cause with the sole purpose of strengthening our union and providing supports for healthcare workers to feel more protected, heard, and supported. We will need all leaders from across the state and hospitals to step up alongside us who share our

mission and are willing to lead through integrity and grit. ​​

What can members do?

​

Show up and join forces with your union sisters and brothers! We have created multiple ways for members to connect and share their stories, ask questions, learn about their local contracts as well as union governing documents, and support each other to run for elected seats. This will all help to create a more educated and engaged membership.

​

At the most foundational level of being a union worker is the responsibility to VOTE in elected officials. This means we each need to stay engaged so we are aware of local and union-wide elections that we can vote in. Voting is the most powerful tool we have in making positive changes in our union and to help give the

members the strength and support we all deserve.

• Attend Member Driven Townhall meetings

• Help to share information about the Member Driven Movement with your coworkers

• Gather signatures for Member Driven leaders running to elected seats

• Distribute Member Driven flyers

• Buy swag

• Run for local steward and/or Executive Board office (We will support you!)

• VOTE IN EVERY ELECTION!!!
