Know your rights

ANY TIME you are called into a meeting with management which could lead to discipline, you have the right to ask for representation. Even if a steward is not available, you have the right to have a witness and can bring in one of your coworkers. Management also needs to allow you adequate time to arrange for a steward to be available. If you attend a meeting with management alone and they begin to talk about an issue that sounds like it can lead to discipline, you have the right to invoke your rights and ask for a union representative.

Some scenarios include:

  • violation of work procedures

  • absenteeism

  • insubordination

  • poor attitude

  • work performance

“If this discussion could in any way lead to my being disciplined or terminated, I respectfully request that my steward be present at the meeting. Without representation present, I choose not to respond to any questions or statements.”

“Si esta discusión pudiera de alguna manera llevarme a ser disciplinado o despedido, solicito respetuosamente que mi delegado (steward) esté presente en la reunión. Sin representación presente, elijo no responder a ninguna pregunta o declaración.”
